! ViewChanges -- History of changes to Views

October 1, 1990

	Browser
Make new browsers from old ones with clone
Support <control>S for file save menu selection

	ValueDisplay
Fix so they work when not connected

	List.collect[obj, sel]
Send a message to obj using sel with each value in list.
Similar messages were added to kernel Class and Dictionary.

	Image.change
Images are now portable. This selector tell the image
to update its internal structure based on changes made
	to the public pixel array.

September 1991
Generalized object I/O has been added. See implementation
	in ReadObject.alt and WriteObject.alt

January 1992
Extensive changed made to the Editing classes to suport
'revert' when user does not finish editing a string.

August 1992
	Browser, EditSafe, ScrollParagraph, ScrollSafeParagraph
Changes were made to make the browser safer. User is
prompted when a action would discard unsaved changes.

October 1992
MenuBar added and Menu modified to allow traditional
menu bar behavior. Menus can now be hierarchical as well.

May 26, 1993
	ModalGetParam, EditString fixes:
Pressing the OK button in modal dialogs caused the value
to revert! The OK button has been removed. This makes
the dialog more consistant with the other text controls.
Using 'find' in the browser did not select the text on
	the first try.

June 28, 1993
PopUpMenu can now extend beyond the boundaries of the parent
	view.

September 2, 1993
The Browser now selects the most recently compiled class.
ValueControl can extend the size of the verify closure if
the number of parameters increases on a subsequent #verifyWith
	message.
PopUpMenu will now draw or erase correctly even if it extends
	outside the parent view's boundary.

November 4, 1993
Workspace beeps when a file is not found rather than throwing an
error. ( This is now the same as browser.)

November 14, 1993
	Menu.get[2].setActive[state]
When changing the active state of menu button 2, the bottom
line of the menu boundary is erased. Because the menu items
are not visible when their state is changed, a good work around
is to use #initActive[state] instead of #setActive. Because
#initActive does not redraw the item, the problem is never
	visible.

November 15, 1993
	Browser and Workspace repair:
The saveAs menu item did not correctly mark the current
file as 'Saved' so the confirm dialog would appear
unexpectedly when a new file was selected.

November 28, 1993
Browser and Workspace: Sending #erase to an already
invisible browser or workspace added them twice to
the free pool. Subsequent #clone messages could
recycle a browser that was already being used!

	Changes to WriteObject.alt
Changes to the Alltalk Kernel required changes
to the WriteObject.alt methods. The single quote
escape character in the Alltalk kernel was backslash,
but this choice was not appropriate for IBM PC
machines because it appears in file path names as
a delimeter. The escape character has been changed
to backquote. This will only require changes to
your programs if they use quotes embeded in literal
	strings.

Browser and Workspace: Files loaded with the file
open dialog are now displayed and saved using their
full original path names. This should eliminate
problems with default directory changes causing
files to be saved in unexpected places.

December 21, 1993
ModalDialogs were changed so the Windows version
works properly. (The modalWindow must be assigned
a value at a different time because the event arrive
in a different order.) Both Mac and PC are the same.

Cluster was modified so no value is sent when the
value has not changed. This fixes related problems
	in subclasses such as RadioCluster.

The default size for the line cache in Paragraph
has been increased to allow editing larger files.

	StringCluster, StringList, Browser, and Workspace
have been modified to fix the old bug that made the
class selector scrollbar show the wrong value when
a file was opened from the Browser file menu.

Menu and MenuBar have been fixed so submenus don't
	show through when they shouldn't.

January 25, 1994
MenuBar needed to position submenus one pixel lower so they
don't hit the lower edge of top level menus.
Browser did not clear the file name display when 'new' was
	selected from the file menu.

January 26, 1994
ValueDisplay protocol was altered to not redraw values that
havn't changed. This was done long ago for ValueControls.
Applications that depend on always redrawing the value should
	use the message: .initValue[x].drawValue

February 2, 1994
The images subdirectory in views has been eliminated. The image
files for views objects are now in the same directory as the
classes. This was done to eliminate a compatibility problems with
path names in different operating systems.

February 24, 1994
Class Control has been revised to fix a problem with missed
	control actions.

February 28, 1994
Class Control revised to fix bugs introduced by above.
(Browser selections changed when the class selector
	scroll bar was adjusted.)

April 5, 1994
Arranger bug introduced by Control changes is fixed.

April 12, 1994
A very old bug in MenuBar that caused menus to close
without sending their values has been fixed.

September 14, 1994
To improve the reliability of double click processing
in EditStrings and related classes, a new class has
been added to defer mouse events while controls are
active. The new class is DeferEvent. It has been
added to aadefine.alt. A new version of Control.alt
is also included. Classes EditString and MenuBar have
been modified slightly to get better display result
on both the Mac and PC without as much stuff in
the MSWExtras.alt file. As a result of these changes,
	MSWExtras is much smaller.

October 4, 1995

Methods to clear most of the ValueDisplay and ValueControl
subclasses have been added. After being cleared, they are
supposed to show 'no value'. This is used to display controls
in panels that are detached from their target models.

	ValueDisplay.clear
	ValueControl.clear
	StringDisplay.clear
	EditDisplay.clear
	Button.clear
	BarIndicator.clear
	Cluster.clear
	PopUpMenu.clear
	Lamp.clear
	CrtWindow.clear
	StringCluster.clear

Methods have been added to the two dimensional text classes to
support resizeing them by specifying their character dimensions:

	Paragraph.dimension
	StringCluster.dimension
	ScrollParagraph.dimension

	Changes to class View:

The relative positioning methods, #rightOf, #leftOf, etc. now work
when the parameter object is inside of some other view. Two new
methods are added to support this:

	View.relX
	View.relY

	The changed classes are:

	View.rightOf
	View.leftOf
	View.above
	View.below
	View.centerWith

In addition, View.sameAs[aView] will make the receiver the same
	width and height as 'aView'.

	Other changes to Views Classes:

	StringDisplay.size
Return the number of characters that can be visible.
		(Value specified by #setSize[aSize])

	StringCluster.list
		Return the internal StringList

	StringCluster.start
Modified to support using the arrow keys for navigation

	StringCluster.keyDown[c]
Modified to support using the arrow keys for navigation

	StringCluster.remove[n]
		Remove the nTh line.
You must #update to show the change.

	StringCluster.addBefore[n, aString]
		Add aString before line n.
You must #update to show the change.

	ModalGetParam.showValue[aMessage]
Preset the message display display before drawing.

	ModalNotifier.$keyDown[c]
Any keystroke will now dismiss (erase) the dialog window.

	EditParagraph
All the class variables for keycodes have been moved to
Views:extras.alt as part of class Object so they can be
		shared by other classes.

	****************************************************
New additions to kernel classes in Views/extras.alt

	Integer.bin
Return a String of binary bits that represent self.

	Integer.hex
Return a String of 'hexels' that represent self.

	System.wait[time]
Hang up for 'time' seconds. This is a busy loop.

	LexFile.reset
Used to reset some internal variables if you crash
		while parsing a LexFile.

Object: New variables have be added. They are the key code
constants taken from EditParagraph. This was done
so the codes can be shared by other classes.

	Array.collect[receiver, selector, p1, p2, p3, p4]
A new method that compliments #forAll.

	Real.inv
Return the inverse 1.0/self of a real number.

	ValueControl.showValue[v]
Now works even when the control is disabled. This
is a new idea and you may need to modify some of
		your subclasses accordingly.

November 21, 1995
	Added Workspace.writeln[vars...]
This method lets the workspace be used like stdout
	for displaying debugging information.

	Added ViewWindow.rescale.
Used to display a window after the programmer has
edited the #at[x,y] or #resize message in a subclass
to reposition the internal parts. The method will send
the message #at[self.x, self.y] to the window which,
in turn, will do a #resize with the current window
position and size. It then sends self.content.draw to
	redisplay the new window contents.

September 9, 1996
Rare memory leaks in Control.alt and ValueControl.alt
	have been fixed.

January 20, 1996
Browser & Workspace are changed so that command R (compile
line) will not try to cancel a NIL selection when the
compiled expression causes a new window to come to the front.

January 14, 1997
Added a safe 'quit' item to Browser & Workspace.

March 8, 1997
NameButtons now have provisions for color.
Control has metaclass methods for setting the global
priority and delay for the tracking event.
Control has a metaclass method to get 'unstuck' from
certain rare hangups after programming errors.

July 28, 1997
Add method for (View).sameAs[aView] to make self the
	same size as aView.

October 1, 1997
View classes have been revised for the new kernel that
uses direct color. To support the old style image files,
class Image has a method called "oldRead". A new
icon editor is in ViewTools that reads the old images
	and writes the new ones.
All classes that used .setFill are now revised to
use TRUE or NIL for the parameter. In most cases,
setFill is now obsolete becase subclasses of
FillView set the fill value to TRUE automatically.

Please read the entry for Alltalk version Z15W27 in
	kernel/aaChanges.txt for additional details.

February 10, 1998
Update extras.alt to include all the LexFile token
	classifications.

June 1, 1998
The methods for relative positioning in View used
the space offset incorrectly. Method for #rightOf
	#leftOf, #above, #below were changed.

July 22, 1998
	CheckButton
	NameButton
Modified to draw inactive state better.
	Paragraph
Wrote an extra blank line at the end of a file.
	Views/*.img
All the image files are now in the 'new' color format.
	extras.alt
A bug was fixed that cut images short when reading
		and writing image files.

July 30, 1998
	NameButton.alt
Correction from Brad Thoen for inactive state display.
	FileDialog.alt
New class for file browsing without hanging up event loop.
	ModalDialog.alt
	ModalGetParam.alt
Don't display a window title by default.
	ModalFileDialog.alt
New class added to pick files without hanging up event loop.

September 2, 1998
	Control
The default period for control tracking has
been make longer (now 1/10) second. Several
people complained that it was hard to get
		a single click event.

	MenuBar
Menus now act like MS Windows.
It would be easy to add a mode for this,
but why bother? It is a sad Mac day...

	EditParagraph
	Browser
	Workspace
Because the new MenuBar can be open without
the mouse being 'down', we have to correctly
stop the blinking cursor in EditParagraphs that
may be underneath the cursor. A method for
		#suspendCursor was added to EditParagraph.
Browser and Workspace need to add behavior
to methods for #start and #stop to operate
		the text cursor.

	View,
	EditString,
	ModalGetParam,
	ModalFileDialog:

Modal dialogs with text fields did not have OK
buttons until now because EditStrings would revert
to their previous value if the user clicked outside
the text edit field before pressing enter.

This has been fixed and the ModalGetParam and
ModalFileDialog classes now have ok and cancel
		buttons.

To support the 'no revert' mode, EditString class
now has a method #setRevert[flag] to control the
rever behavior. The default value of the flag is
TRUE so existing code requires no attention.
If the flag is changed to NIL, the user will be
able to click outside the text file and the value
displayed will not revert. It is then up to the
client class to do one of two things: To respond
to the OK button, the message #accept must be
sent to the EditString. This makes the value the
user was editing become the value of the control.
The value is <not> propagated over the controls
connection. To respond to the CANCEL button, the
message #revert should be sent to the EditString.
This will cause the previous value of the control
	to be displayed.

Class View had to have a small change to support
this behavior: When the user clicks outside the
keyObject View sent the message #revert. This has
been changed so now Views sends the message
#deselect instead. The EditString decides what to
do with #deselect based on the value of the revert
	flag.

September 3, 1998
	TextButton.alt
Add method for drawActive to prevent erasing
the MenuBar's lower border when menu item
2 (just below the border) is set active or
		inactive.
	MenuBar.alt
Repair a bug in tracking introducted by the
		new stay-down behavior.

September 15, 1998
	PopUpMenu.alt
		Add a method for #initActive.

	Added
		VLine.alt
		HLine.alt

Brad alreay had two classes with these names, but the new ones
look embossed, so don't use Brad's old ones.

	mswExtras.alt
Eliminated. Sources work the same on Windows, Mac, Unix
		and WinCE without changes.

	EditString.alt
Modified so you can type more digits if the value has
		leading spaces.

February 24, 1999
	Lamp.alt
Use 'canonical' image and edit the colors rather
		than drawing circles.
	Menu.alt
	MenuBar.alt
		Adjustments for hierarchical menus.

March 2, 1999
Several changes were 'undone' to the Paragraph subclasses.
This eliminated recaching overhead for large documents.

	Lamp.alt
The lamp and its images are redrawn in a new size.
A 'clear' state has been added.

	StringDisplay.alt
#showValue did not check for visibility.

	Lamp.alt
		#showValue visibility check was wrong.

The filename display is now wider and you can
edit the name to load another file.
	Workspace.alt
You can edit the file name to load a file.
	Scroll.alt
An ancient bug was fixed that cause
an "undefined" message when the user
clicked right on the edge of a scroll
		bar.

Scroll also should not draw value when
not active, Knob will draw their string
value when inactive, but not the thumb.

March 22, 1999
	Menu.alt
Stand-alone menus locked up when the title
		was selected and released.

March 26, 1999
	Paragraph.alt
A small flaw with scrolling was corrected.
Unix did not like inside-out scroll rects.
Don't leave artifacts at bottom of scroll
rect when height does not divide the line
		height.

Change method for writeln to showln so
		we don't break debugging.

April 7, 1999
	EditDisplay.alt
	StringDisplay.alt
The inner light border was changed so it will
show up on 256 color displays.

April 8, 1999
	Paragraph.alt
	Editparagraph.alt
	ScrollParagraph.alt
	TextList.alt
Support automatic scrolling when mouse or cursor
		move out of sight.

	Menu.alt
Stand alone menus were not quite high enough to
display lower case letters like y or g.

	Lamp.alt
Make center larger and add highlight.

April 28, 1999
	EditString.alt
Revert is now handled a little differently.
The whole parent branch is notified if they
		are interested in revert.

June 6, 1999
All text editing has been revised to use continuous
scrolling. This applies to dragging the cursor
horzonatally and vertically as well as using the
	arrows.

	ScrollEditDisplay.alt
Added to supply a horizontally scrolling
EditDisplay. This is not used for numbers
in ViewTools, but it is nice for long strings.

	RangeKnob.alt
Added to provide Brad-like knobs that have
range setting buttons at the ends.

	ScrollView.alt
	HVScrollView.alt
	VScrollView.alt
Added to support new scrolling model for text.

	Lamp.alt
		Uses a 'canonical' lamp.img.
The setColor message creates new images with the
proper colors. A cache is used internally to
support automatic reuse of lamps that have the
		same colors.

	TextList.alt
	Paragraph.alt
	EditParagraph.alt
		Small Paragraphs, EditParagraphs, EditDisplays, etc
that contain only one line are now handed without
updating the shared line cache. This makes editing
with the browser work much better with applications
that have lots of active displays.

June 15, 1999
The fill pattern definitions have been moved to the
Views/obsolete.alt file. Soon I hope to delete this
	file.

The font model has not had 'orthoginal' attributes since
the Mac era. The kernel now reflects this with the new
Font class. As a result, the methods for #setFontStyle,
#setFontSize and in some text classes, #setSize and
#setStyle have all been eliminated throughout Views and
	ViewTools.

They have been reimplemented as warning methods in the
Views/obsolete.alt file. They each display a warning
message in the listener window. The warning tells you
where the offending message originated. Since most
of these messages didn't work before, removing them
from your classes will have no effect. If you need
font attributes other than the standard fonts, use
the new Font class as show in the Views/graphics.alt
	example.

June 23, 1999
Add optional features for the browser:
(Include these if you like them.)

	browserExtras.alt
New command keys to indent or comment a selection.

	browserHighlight.alt
		Turn on syntax highlighting.
This is only good on fast (>300 mhz) processors.

Add support for all the mouse buttons and the wheel.
	See View/$buttonDown for details.

July 7, 1999
	Scroll.alt
	View.alt
	Control.alt
	ScrollView.alt
	StringCluster.alt
	Paragraph.alt
		Modified to support the wheel.

July 13, 1999
	HLine.alt
	VLine.alt
These objects got clipped incorrectly because they
set their width to 1 instead of 2 pixels.
	VScrollView.alt
The boundary height was too high by one pixel, cutting
		off the bottom of StringClusters.
	BoxButton.alt
		Embossed & colored.
	OvalButton.alt
Embossed & colored. These don't look so good yet.

July 20, 1999
	EditDisplay.alt
The method for #revert got deleted somehow.

July 27, 1999
	views/extras.alt
Method for #wait was recalibrated to
go with the faster event tic rate.

August 4, 1999
	ModalDialog.alt
ModalDialogs (and subclasses) are now displayed
without go away or resize boxes.
Panel should probably get the same treatment.

August 23, 1999
When menus were pulled down over a visible blinking cursor,
the erased 'hole' showed through the menu. Fix:

	EditParagraph.alt
	Remove the method for #suspendCursor.

	Workspace.alt
	Browser.alt
The method for #stop now uses #stopCursor instead of #suspendCursor.

	EditDisplay.alt
		Revised in an ill-advised manner.

September 19, 1999
	EditDisplay.alt
Put it back the way it was.
		The last change broke editing.

September 29, 1999
	ScrollParagraph.alt
The method for #dimension got lost.

	StringCluster.alt
	Paragraph.alt
When the value was set out of range,
the value did not scroll into view.

November 14, 1999
View.scroll has been changed to use
the new kernel method for #scrollRect.
It now handles scrolling correctly for
windows that are not entirely visible
on the screen. It is also considerably
	simpler and faster than before.

December 9, 1999
	EditParagraph.alt
Several problems caused pasting from another
application's clipboard to fail after the first
	successful paste.

January 3, 2000
	EditParagraph.alt
When the Alltalk program quit, the clipboard was
not correctly returned to the system.

February 10, 2000
	ScrollView.alt
When scrolling to text using the find menu, position
the target in the middle of the screen instead of the
	bottom or top.

March 02, 2000
	EditParagraph.alt
Modify method for #drawCursor to use the new Window
primative for #drawCursor. This was done to improve
	portablitity to X-Windows systems.

May 18, 2000
	Selection.alt
In the method for #extend, the #drawLine was sent
but the font was not reloaded. If a concurrent
method changed the font, the selection got
	corrupted.

May 19, 2000
	StringCluster.alt
Support selection by typing a prefix string.

	Paragraph.alt
A bug in drawLines caused an extra line to
	be drawn.

June 15, 2000
Several Text and Button classes have small revisions
	to support Translations.

	Menu.open no longer does a self.makeTop....

The method for rescale in TextButton was renamed to
be contract. This is more consistent with other
	classes.

July 7, 2000
MenuBar had a flaw that prevented correct updates
when system modal windows were dragged across the
bounds of an open MenuBar. This was easy to see
when using the Browser's file/open dialog. If
the user canceled the file dialog, an irregular
region on the browser window under the menu bar
	would not be updated.

July 19, 2000
	PopUpMenu.alt
Had an obscure bug that interacted with Translation.
When testing a Translation with the all-capitals default,
the result of asking for the name of a TextButton will
give the correct string, but the object id is itself
a buffer inside of Translation. When contracting a
PopUpMenu, the first button is for the title so the
result of doing get[1] is the second button. When
the contract occurs, all the buttons are considered
and the first button will contain some random string
used in some other control. The fix is to make contract
	ignore the first button.

Septermber 21, 2000
	ModalDialog.alt
The titles of ModalDialogs on Unix machines showed
up as stars or question marks if the alltalk
program didn't do a #setName. This has been fixed
	so the title is blank.

September 28, 2000
A method for Context.show[n] has been added to the
View/extras.alt. It supports display of the calling
context of a method to any level. This helps with
debugging when you are unsure how a method is being
	invoked.

October 3, 2000
ViewWindow no longer does a #cancelSelection when
a $grow event is reported. This makes the cursor
start correctly in ModalDialog subclasses that
	contain EditDisplays.

	Inspector.alt has been polished.
	By default, Views/aadefine.alt includes the
	new file 'useKernelVars.alt'. This enables
the Inspector to see all kernel class ivars.

EditDisplay.startCursor & stopCursor have been removed.
The correct way to pass control to an EditDisplay is
by using #grabCursor. This will start the cursor if
the display is empty and select the value if the display
	shows a string.

	Paragraph.alt
Paragraphs were initialized with a single null string.
This was done to clean up EditString.alt, but it had
an undesireable side-effect on StringCluster so this
	change was removed.

	EditString.alt
Now initializes with a single blank line. (Because
it can't inherit this characteristic from Paragraph.)

November 17, 2000
	EditParagraph.alt
Make the cursor insertion point control variables
instance variables rather than class variables. This
simplifies cursor management and fixes a bug that left
cursor artifacts when EditStrings were cleared concurrently.

	EditParagraph.alt
Add an optional parameter for #goto in EditParagraph:
			aParagraph.goto[x, y, fromTop]
The fromTop is an optional real-valued parameter which
controls how far from the top edge the selected line
will appear. The default value is 0.25 which conforms
		to the previous behavior.
	ScrollView.alt
Add support for fromTop in the method for #scrollView.
	StringCluster.alt
Pass the fromTop parameter to scrollView with 0.5 as
		the position.

December 4, 2000
	ViewWindow.alt
Add a method for #active to tell when the updateEvent is active.

	EditParagraph.alt
Don't draw or erase the cursor when the parent window is inactive.
This fixes a problem with the cursor showing through menus.
This problem was introduced by the November 17 update.

January 4, 2001

	Control.alt
The kernel method for Window.track was change to return a bit mask of
the mouse button states. The method for #trackControl was changed to
		use this change.

	Paragraph.alt
The method for #reset set the value to zero, but this is a domain
error because Paragraphs don't have a value. The value is a subclass
responsibility and I may not be a number.

	StringList.alt
StringLists do have a value, so they must now set it to zero on #reset
		since Paragraph does not.

	ViewWindow.alt
The commented-out code for punch-though mouse events was removed.

	EditParagraph.alt
Update an incorrect comment in the method for #locate.

March 27, 2001

	graphics.alt
		New constants for window types.

	useLexTokens.alt
Change values to allow for the new lex_wideString token.

	ReadObject.alt
Modify to use the tokens defined in useLexTokens.alt

	aaDefine.alt
Modify to include useLexTokens.alt before ReadObject.alt

April 24, 2001

	Paragraph.alt
The method for showln was broken.

May 22, 2001

	IconEditor.alt
		Fell into disrepair when Window.$buttonDown
		protocol changed.

July 16, 2001

	ModalFileDialog.alt
Add a feature that allows the user to open directories
or windows volume names by typing the directory path
or volume name in the file name display.

July 24, 2001

	Control.alt
The update made on January 4 caused controls of type
ctlContinuous to always get at least 2 #track messages.
This has been fixed so that on button clicks produce
		only one #track message.

August 29, 2001

	MenuBar.alt
Spurious mousedown events could be generated for a
window that poped up under the mouse cursor in response
to menu selections. Menus operating in "Windows mode"
sent their values when the mouse button was down, rather
than waiting for the mouse to go up. This has been fixed.

	ViewWindow.alt
The kernel now handles sending a $buttonDown when a
window is selected, so it does not have to be done
by the method for $select in ViewWindow.alt

September 4, 2001

	MenuBar.alt
With punch-though mouse events, it it possible for a window
to process and update event with a menu open. If the menu is
not the top object, it gets corrupted by the background views.
To fix this, the method for #start in MenuBar now does a
		"self.makeTop".

February 20, 2002

	ImageView.alt
The mode was not properly initialized if #initSize was not
used to create an internal Image. The resulting mode was NIL,
which older versions of class Window incorrectly accepted.

	ImageView.alt
The "Pen" was not used, so I made ImageView a subclass of View.

March 17, 2003

	Button.alt
		Add a method for #terminate.

	Control.alt
Always use #releaseControl as the error escape method.
Doing this made it necessary to add #terminate to Button
so the Button will pop out after an error.

If this doesn't work out, the old ones are in:

	Button.alt.old
	Control.alt.old

April 14, 2003

	Button.alt
Fix the last fix so bi-momentary buttons work again.

April 30, 2003

	extras.alt
		Remove modalWindow variable.

	ViewWindow.alt
		Add modalWindow variable.
Don't allow mouse events if this variable is non-NIL.
The kernel has been changed to support click-select
		mouse events.

	ModalDialog.lat
Remove self.select from METHOD draw. This is already
		done by super.draw.

July 31, 2003

	ModalDialog.alt
Erase any visible ModalDialog before drawing a new one.

August 12, 2003

	Menu.alt
Close the menu if the window gets deselected.

	ViewWindow.alt
Modified to keep track of "selected" state.
