# AASystemChanges.txt -- Operating system files needed by b600

The b600Proj/AppSys contains backups of the system files we
have changed.

If you are ever in the unfortunate state of starting over
with a new installation of the HPUX workstation software,
you will have to replace/reconfigure the system files
included here.

It is probably not safe to simply copy these files back
where they were because system updates may make subtle
changes to the format and content of system configuration
files.

The files included here have modified names to reflect
where they go in the system. For example the system file:

	/etc/rc.config.d/nfsconf

Is backed up here as:

	etc_rc.config.d_nfsconf

What are all these files for, anyway?

	/etc/fstab
Configures the mount points for file systems
		on devices.
We add mount points for the cdrom and floppy
so you can mount these devices by typing simply:

		mount /mnt/cdrom
		mount /mnt/floppy

	/etc/hosts
Defines the mapping between name and IP numbers
so you can type "telnet daq" instead of some
		IP number.

	/etc/exports
Defines the local directories other systems can
see as nfs mount points. If you change this file,
you need to execute (as root:)

			exportfs -ua
			exportfs -a

(Doesn't HPUX have something link the linux exportfs -r ?)

	/etc/passwd

		This system password file.
I suspect that HPUX has a more marvelous security system
so that restoring this file might not restore the proper
		user permissions.

	/etc/rc.config.d

These are the files that start and stop system services
at startup and shudown. On HPUX they also may contain the
actual parameters that configure the service.

	/etc/rc.config.d/netconf

Specify the LAN configuation for our two ethernet cards.

	/etc/rc.config.d/nfsconf

		Enable nfs

	/etc/rc.config.d/namesvrs

Configure DNS. I edit this file to turn DNS off. We only
need the local /etc/hosts file to do our IP names.
This would be turned on if we had a lot of satellite
machines on our LAN and wanted to be the central server
for mapping names to IP numbers.

	/etc/dt
This directory has the scripts that fire off our programs
from CDE menu at the bottom of the screen and their icons.

	rhosts.backup

This is the invisible file that should be named

			/home/mts/.rhosts

It contains the ip names of the wave controller and
data acquisition machines as defined in /etc/hosts.

The VxWorks system can't get at the startup code if this
		file has a problem.
