Unix commands:

ls List directory.

ls -l List with more information (sizes, dates).

ls -ld adir List permissions on "adir" directory.

ls -a List all, including the hidden files that begin with "."

ls | more List and pipe output to more to show one screen

				at a time.

rm filename Delete a file.

mkdir Make a directory.

rmdir Remove an (empty) directory.

rm -f Force remove, works for directories.

rm -fr Remove with force and recursion, deletes down into

directories, removing files and directories. Same as

				"destroy" from Vax VMS.

cd adir Change into "adir" directory.

cd .. Change to parent directory.

cd / Change to the root directory of the system.

cd ~ Change back to your home directory.

cd ~/WWW Change to your public WWW page directory.

man acommand Get manual info on "acommand".

man ? Get Help manual

chmod a+r filename Give "all" read access to the file.

chmod a+rx filename Give "all" read & execute permission.

chmod a-rwx filename Take away read, write, execute permission.

Note: If you put a directory full of stuff in your ftp directory, you also

have to give execute permission to "all" or they won't be able to get into

the directory.

More on permissions:

To see the access permissions on a directory:

	ls -ld thoen

You should see something very much like this:

	drwxr-xr-x 2 sparks user 512 Sep 14 07:55 thoen

The string of weird letters on the left are the permissions. To intepret

them, ignor the first letter "d for directory" and break up the string

into groups of three:

	rwx r-x r-x

The three groups of three letters are for the file owner (you), others

in your "group", and finally, everyone else.

When you create a new directory you have read, write & execute permission.

Others in your group have read and execute.

Others not in your group (everyone) have read and execute permissions.

The classes of people are designated:

	"u" for user

	"g" for group

"o" for others in your group

	"a" for all

The usual permissions are:

	"r" for read

	"w" for write (and delete)

	"x" for execute

To change your permissions use the "chmod" command. For example, to let

everyone write on your directory:

	chmod -v oa+w thoen

This says that "others" and "all" are given the permission to write.

To remove this permission:

	chmod -v oa-w thoen

The -v is optional and makes the command "verbose" so it tells you what

you've done.
