Schneider Trophy Racers - Page 8

Macchi M.39

This racer won the Schneider Trophy in 1926. Note the brass colored cooling tubes on the aircraft for engine cooling. This method was used on all of the Italian Schneider Cup Racers to reduce cooling drag.

Macchi-Castoldi M.72 1931

This is the last racer from 1931 that had trouble competing because of loss of pilot; however, in 1934, it set the speed record for seaplanes that still stands today at 443 mph. What makes this plane so unusual is the fact that it has TWO engines in-line driving counter-rotating propellers to reduce torque.
